another magazine reflection

For this project I saw that I had many things to learn about writing.

reflection 2

1. Overall, when you think about the big picture of your writing, what improved? How did it get better? Why?

A lot changed in my writing during this time that we were working on this magazine. I was very used to writing one certain way all of the time. I was used to writing in like I was writing a five paragraph essay. For projects that is just what i do for everything. When i first came into this project that is the mindset that I had, I was going to write another five paragraph essay, that would be easy. Everything changed on the day i first turned in what I was going to input to the magazine, Randy told us that we had to write more like in article format, something that is interesting to the reader as well as informational. I had to change the way I was going to write this paper. We looked at articles in different magazines in order to see how they are written. This was a very good process because we get to see how different people start off their articles and how they get peoples attention. I think that something that really improved in my writing was that I was able to change the way I was going to write instead of having it in a five paragraph format, I had to write it like a magazine article now and I was able to do so with the help of Randy's critique. It is very good that I am now able to expand on my writing in a different way

2. Overall, when you think about the big picture of your writing, what still needs work? What do you think will help you improve? Why?

Something I really have a problem with is that i am very repetitive in my writing. I notice this in many pieces of writing that I have done. That is definitely something that I have to work on when it comes to my writing . I have to learn to express my ideas in different ways instead of making things sound repetitive, even if that explanation is short and simple. I should just be enough information for the reader to know what I am trying to get at in the piece of writing. i also have to learn to make smoother transitions from one subject to the other instead of just jumping from one topic to the other. If I am trying to get a point out I should just automatically state it instead of making a long story of it, I should "Cut to the chase" like Randy said while critiquing my article.

3. Specifically, show us something that improved and describe the path it took to get better. You can quote your article, your drafts, link to evidence, etc.

Something that needed work on basically throughout the whole writing process, is something that I did not know how to change when it was explained to me. I would change it a little bit but it was not the sentence that it now is. In my first draft this was the sentence "Tijuana is 300 feet above San Diego, after rain, San Diego and Tijuana are both impacted by the trash washed down the Tj River."
When that sentence was critiqued by Randy he wanted me to be way more specific with that sentence and I could not understand that. My sentence would get better everytime but it wasn't getting to where it needed to be. By the end when I finally got the sentence toits best it read like this, "However after the rain trash travels down to San Diego through the Tijuana River, because much of the city of San Diego is on the coast and Tijuana is uphill, and upriver, 300 feet above sea level."
In the end when I was all done with my article I felt that the sentence was at its best.

4. Describe something specific (or a few things!) that you learned about writing.

I learned so many things about writing while writing my article for the magazine.
something I learned was structuring the writing, using the loop starting and ending with something good and using the middle to tie them together, the middle not so important.
I learned how to use the verbs and subject better in a sentence, like how to start of strong by having the subject and verb in the beginning of the sentence, which does make your sentences sound better.
I now avoid using sledgehammer words in anything that I write unless they are really needed which is rare but they might be needed at some point.
I think doing copyediting to your work is good as well that way you can get it critiqued many times by many people and by the end your writing becomes a great piece of writing.
I learned how to explain things thouroughly with a little bit of writing instead of a big explanation.

magazine reflection

1) What went well for you during the process of creating this magazine?

The thing that really went well for me during this process the critiqueing process. I love getting my work critiqued because that way many people can give me their input on my work and whether something should be changed. I like it when people are really blunt and honest when something does not make sense, or does not work, I will take the advice so don't be scared to let me know what is wrong with my paper. I always like to ask Randy to critique my paper because he does all of the things that I just mentioned which is really good because I always feel that by the end of the writing and critiqueing process my work is the best it can be.

2. What challenges did you face as you moved from an early draft or idea to a final product?

Whe we first started writing our articles for the magazine, I really had no idea what I wanted to do for my article. I chose to put in my photoessay which was already completed, but then Randy was talking to us about other things we can do that way it could be something sort of new. So that gave me the idea to take parts of my photoessay and parts of my mentor interview and put it together to make my article. I was able to incorporate those two things together but also make something new with it. I was able to change something about it all make make a whole new article, so that was something that I struggled with in the begining.

3. What other examples of work—student and professional—stood out as exemplary and served as a good model for your own work?

I like a lot of people work, whe leo asked me to critique his paper I read it and I really liked it. I felt that it was very professional and that it was a very good topic that had to dod with him and his internship. He made a lot of sense and I just really liked reading his as well as other peoples articles.

OBAMA n Socialism

Google the phrase "Obama Socialism". What do you get? Try google news... what did you find?

When looking up the phrase "Obama Socialism" I found that many people are saying that Obama is turning our country in a socialist country. In an article I found on Spectator and there they were talking about how Obama was being bashed by so many Republicans because they did not want to pay their taxes, but they are paying less taxes with Obama than they were with Bush. "How do these protesters expect to not pay taxes but still enjoy the parks, schools, roads and protection the money from these taxes support?"
People are paying taxes for things that they themselves are using, but they are getting mad about it. it is said that our government has already used some socialist elements in the past, but people are protesting that Obama is turning us into a socialist nation. An article in spectator says that, "Obama's plans may do some to expand the socialist elements of U.S. government, the idea that we're about to become a socialist nation is absurd." If some socialist elements have been used in the U.S Government before , why are people only trying to put the blame on our current president? They should see that he is not the first to try and use this .

Do you feel that the label "socialism" is applied appropriately or correctly to Obama, his proposals or his policies?

Do Obama's proposals or policies have historic precedents in America? If so, what happened in the past?

Lit Groups

LITERATURE GROUPS

I like reading a new book, because I have gotten out of the reading process and I really needed to get my reading skills back up. Something that I really like about this was that we took notes on the book, and put them on sticky notes. A lot of times I seem to forget what I read about and having those sticky notes, I am able to look back and check what I have previously read. that is also a way too see, what exactly I think about when I am reading because a lot of the time i seem to get distracted from my reading. I actually found out that I read better when I am taking notes on almost every page, I seem to pay more attention, don't get as distracted. i find that interesting and I am glad that i found that out, I am going to use this process whenever I read a book.

I Guess when we were Planning out the time frame on how much we were going to read and by when, we didn't really think about how some of the chapters were very long, and a lout of the time some people in our group where not able to keep up with the reading and all of the school work we had to do, including me. we were not very well organized with the due dates, we need to think ahead.

The book was about troubled boy by the name Huckleberry Finn. His father is an alcoholic and he abuses Huck sometime, like when he gets drunk he seems to beat him, for little things, and he wants to take charge of Huck. Huck did not like that, so he ran away from this cabin that his dad was keeping him in. On his journey he found his friend, he was a runaway slave. They went on journeys together keeping each others secrets, Huck was suppose to be dead, and Jim had run away. Jim and Huck helped each other survive on islands. They went through struggles, and Huck in the end helps Jim out of jail and proves that he is a free man. They stuck together and helped each other a lot

I hope that we get more time to read the next book.

photoessay

My internship is at a non-profit organization called WiLDCOAST, located in Imperial Beach. Their mission statement says what they are hoping to accomplish; “WiLDCOAST protects and preserves coastal ecosystems and wildlife in the Californias and Latin America by building grassroots support, conducting Media Campaigns and establishing protected areas.” This organization and the people who work in it want to protect the environment as well as wildlife. It is a pleasure to work with this organization trying to do everything possible to keep our environment because all of this affects us in the long run. WiLDCOAST has many campaigns to show the people what they are trying to do and get the community involved in the work they are trying to accomplish. The Tijuana River is three fourths in Tijuana but one fourth of the TJ River is in San Diego, and the water flow from the river affects the public trails are no longer available for people to enjoy.

My mentor Ben McCue is a project manager at WiLDCOAST working on the trash flow from the Tijuana River into the Pacific Ocean. After rain, San Diego and Tijuana are impacted the trash washed down the TJ River, thousands of bottles, tires, and other kinds of trash travel down into the public trails in the estuary. We are three hundred feet below Tijuana so all of their Trash comes down to our side of town. Currently we are working on a campaign to persuade Officials to establish an incentive program in Tijuana that will make people want to recycle their plastic bottles, which is one of the major things that travels down with the river. Mexico uses more PET bottles than any other country, for the people to be able to recycle these items would be a great help and would reduce the amount of bottles that come down. “Deposit laws significantly reduce container litter and other types of litter”, before the deposit laws were made her in California, container litter was also a problem but as we can see today these laws do work and that is something that is needed in Mexico in order for things to get better we need to start at the root of the problem.

To get entire systems established in a different country a lot of research needs to be done on the US side to show a good argument on how things are run in the other country. Stephanie, Ben and I traveled into Tijuana for additional research; we talked to a woman who runs a recycling program and plant in Tijuana. We wanted to see what exactly they were doing over there to try and prevent al of these litter problems, and to see if we could help them in any way. We learned that they are trying to get the recycling programs in Tijuana to function but they do not have enough promotion, not a lot of people know that they can recycle, and Tijuana’s trash collection system is not fully in place either so it is hard for them to get people to recycle. The trash collectors and recycling companies do not have the sufficient funds to establish an effective recycling system in Mexico the way we have it here in California. We went to Tijuana to find out what the problem is over there so that we could then accurately brainstorm what needs to be done in order for them to have something completely new set up in their country.

WiLDCOAST reaches out to people through the media they are trying to show people that there are problems that could affect the health of the environment and also their own; they might not even know this is happening. WiLDCOAST is featured in news stories for different newscasters. What I think they try to do is show that there is a problem, and they want people to participate in their fight to a healthier safer environment. Very recently they had a story on Fox 5 San Diego news where they were warning people about the contamination of the water in IB, which could contain Hepatitis A. WiLDCOAST gave free vaccinations to anyone who goes into the water to prevent them from getting ill. WiLDCOAST is not just trying to promote their organization; they are actually trying to help people by telling the public about the harm that they face and what that they can do about it through media sources.

As intern at WiLDCOAST I have seen first hand how bad things are at the Tijuana River Valley. I experience the different methods they use to reach out to people or educate the public on problems that we are facing. Stephanie and I went out on Imperial Beach and conducted surveys with surfers or other people who had any water contact. The surveys attempted to find out how many people get sick from having direct contact with the water in IB, and what kind of illnesses they had. This information helps train nurses to look for specific symptoms in surfers or people with direct water contact who come in to report these illnesses; it also trains them to treat these illnesses. I found that this internship is all about communicating to the public the dangers that our environment as well as people face. My mentor Ben is already very good at doing this and with this internship my communication skills are getting better because we are sent out into the field to talk to people we have never seen before and we just have to go for it. You may not know the person but the information that we have could be very valuable to them.

Through surveys we conducted on the beaches in Tijuana, we found that of people do not know where to recycle plastic bottles. Through conducting surveys like these we find out how much the public knows about the problem or solutions to the problem. Many people don’t even know where to recycle their plastic bottles in Tijuana, and if they don’t recycle these bottles the problem will continue. Like My mentor Ben says, “Our ocean and environment have no borders”, they border fence will not keep things from Mexico coming into San Diego. The Border Patrol is not sitting around waiting to collect every piece of trash that crosses over, the ocean and anything that travels through it cannot be stopped or boarded out with this fence it is shared all around.

The two countries need to work together in solving this problem, because they are both affected by it. Mexico does not have the resources needed to establish a recycling system in their country, but we do have those resources here in California. The governments from both sides need to work together and help each other out; it is not benefiting one place more than the other because it is needed by both. First we will start of with educating the people, then we will ask for their help, WiLDCOAST is non-profit so a lot of people who help are volunteers. With many people being aware of the problems the better the chance is to fix it. The US has enough resources to help others, which in turn is we are actually helping ourselves. Working hand in hand to take care of this problem which is affecting the health of the environment, the wildlife, and the public.

Honors blog FDR!

FDR became president in some very hard times the The Great Depression was something that he had to deal with in his time in office. Not an easy task for anyone let alone a president. FDR and his administration had a lot on their hands they ,had to do a lot of planning on what they were going to do in order to change the status of the country. Banks were crashing many, many people lost their jobs and they could barely get any money for them and their family to survive. Coming into this FDR knew his was in for a challenge, he made a promise coming into presidency according to the nation of Nations FDR says. " I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people..". He had to prove that once he had become president, the challenge was going to be great with, "more than 12 million unemployed, 30 banks a week failing, factories idle, farms on the auction block, and prices plummeting..." according to Nation of Nations , he was in for a big one. Through this New Deal FDR was able to do many thing to change the economic system, help the people, and the prevention of future depressions.

FDR had to work fast on getting the economic system back up. The very next day after his inauguration he closed all of the nations banks for four days called the "bank holiday". He wanted to reform the economic crisis the nation was in. The government became involved with the banks under FDR's presidency. The banks that were doing ok would reopen with government support, the banks that were having trouble would be handed over, " to the federal conservators, who would guide them to solvency." So basically the government was becoming more involved with the handling of money, they did not want this to happen again. The financial reforms gave the government more authority to manage the currency and regulate the exchange of stocks transactions. The Glass-Steagall Banking act created federal insurance for banks deposits " up to 2,500". Under the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) fewer banks failed for the rest of the decade. FDR and his administration had to make plans and this one worked it helped all of the failing banks, Th FDIC was a great thing that was made through the New deal. Now he just had to find ways to better the state of the rest of the problems.

FDR was able to save the banks and the financial markets but this was of no help the the people who were suffering because they could not find a job anywhere. At first FDR and the government were basically giving things away to the people through FERA, (Federal Emergency Relief Administration). Then he felt that instead of just giving things away he could create jobs for the people, the "Civil Works Administration (CWA) employed 4 million Americans." That program was to costly so FDR disbanded it in 1934 . Many other work relief programs were then created, to give many of the unemployed Americans jobs. Another example would be the CCC ( Civilian Conservation Corps). This program gave them jobs to basically conserve the youth, it took unmarried 18-25 year olds, to do work int he woods ,and fields, they would have to ,"plant trees, build parks, and fight soil erosion." This program gave 2.5 million young men jobs. This was a great advance to help relieve the unemployed. in the year 1935 the Social Security act was passed to help the elderly, poor, the infirm, and dependent children. It was liek a "new social contract" between the people and the government, they would get insurance in the work place, and the unemployed would get pension, if they had lost their job. There were many programs that were developed in the time FDR was president in order to make things right in the nation and for the nation, he also planned ahead making things that would hep now and in the future so that this would not happen again.

Some of the things that FDR and his administration had come up with were meant to prevent the another depression. The FDIC gave insurance to the people who deposited their money into the banks. This would help not only the people but also the economy neither of them would loose the money because the deposit was insured. The Securities Exchange act (1934) "established a new federal agency, the securities and exchange commission" would over see the stock. The Social Security gave the people a great amount of help and these are some things that are still here today, helping when we need it. These acts were very well thought out they help the people and the economy.

FDR and his administration came up with he New Deal to establish some order into the nation. With the New Deal the government got to play a bigger role, " according to the Nation Of Nations, "it made lasting reforms in the nation's economic system and committed the federal government to a more active role in managing the ups and downs of the business cycle." The government became more involved in the business world and they had more control over the management of the currency. The New Deal brought many new programs into the nation, many of which fell through after some time, a lot of them were effective but "The welfare state had limits, most of the relief measures were designed to last no longer than the crisis." according to the Nation Of Nations. Even thought a lot of the programs did no last they did help the nation in a hard time, and some of these programs are still here today like the FDIC, FCIC, FHA, and also social security. FDR and his administration where able to help the country then and keep it going into the future they left their mark, and if you know about he New deal you can see what it still does today.

immersion

1. What are you most excited about in regards to your immersion experience? Why do you feel this way?

I am really excited about being able to work with Stephanie on this amazing video that we will be crating. Through making this video we are going to be helping people learn but we are going to also be learning in the process. We will get to see how things work in Tijuana and how they compare to how things work in San Diego. We will also be able to put our thoughts on the subject in the Imperial Beach newspaper so I think that is awesome.

2. What are you most concerned about (what causes the most stress) regarding immersion? Why do you feel this way?

OOOhhh my goodness I am concerned about a lot all of this work has to be done at a certain time and it is going to be hard to finish all of the things that we have to finish in this certain amount of time. We have to try and finish this video by the eleventh and we will have time.. but it might be hard because we have to film a lot of things and put it all together at the this time. I am conceredned that we might not finish it in time

Peoples Blogs....

For advice to Barack Obama I chose Ana's blog
here is an excerpt from her blog

An issue that resonates in my mind and in the minds of other Americans, is the struggle to hold a job and steering clear of unemployment. So many have already been affected by this and America knows it far too well, as it is embedded in one of the darkest periods of our country's history. The Great Depression brought hardships upon millions of Americans, sounding very similar to the hardships of today. "By 1932 the unemployment rate had soared past 20 percent. Thousands of banks and businesses had failed." Currently, with our unemployment rate at 7.6 percent, we cannot afford to let it rise any further and rise to the point of the 1930's. A piece of advice for you would be to focus on creating more jobs for Americans. The new jobs should be structured to build upon advances in technology. It sounds like this is already woven into your plan, so I think it should be implemented as soon as possible.

I chose Ana's blog because she gave good advice on how to help the economic situation as well as the people, she talked about current things and also about things in the past that could connect with the topic, she also has very good writing I liked it a lot.

For literary analysis I chose Nyachare's blog

Throughout "The Kite Runner", the antagonist was Assef, often referred to as "blue-eyed Assef" he was known as a savage-thirsty type of man who was evil and put on a show for his parents and those who held his reputation to such high standards. In chapter 5 page 18 there's a quote that refers to him that says, "...he walked the neighborhood like a Khan strolling through his land eager-to-please entourage." His being incuded a two-sided character who was amused by trouble and mischief.

I really like how Nyachare talks about symbolism as a literary device that was used in the book that she read The Kite runner. She takes quotes from the book that show exactly that. i like how she specifically pick out some quotes from the bool where symbolism was shown.

For Historical writing I chose Evan Lott's blog

The populist were their own party, but some of them worked within the democractic party. in the election of 1896 the populists were at a crossroad, stuck between gold and silverites. One populist even said "if we fuse [with the Demorcrats] we are sunk." He then went on to say "if we dont fuse, all the silver men we have will leave us fore the more powerful Democrats. The populist party was going through a rough patch during the election.

I chose Evan's blog because he was able to talk about the things he needed to talk about in his blog, it was very informational, if people didn't know what things were they could learn something about them from his blog. The excerpt from his blog shows this, he talks about some of the main things the populist party was for or against

Darwin's BDAY!!!

Darwin was a famous scientist.... As humanities students (and humans), what responsibility do we have for the understanding of science? What role should scientific inquiry and scientific knowledge play in our own society? How should science influence our decisions, laws, and culture?

Well as humanities students I really don't know, but as humans I think that the understanding of science is something that we should probably know. Well at least the science of life, whether it is plant life, animal life, or the life of people. In biology we were learning about the science of life, and the things that living organism consist of. I thought it was pretty interesting to now were things come from and how they started, also we get to learn about the people who discovered all of these different things.
It is good for people to know how things work an for them to be interested in. I can play a big role in our society it already does it is something that all students learn in school and maybe people can pursue a career that has to do with that. If people want to be curious and find out new things about the science then they can do so I don't think it is something that everybody has to do, just that people who are interested in it, and they can figure out many things in this world.
I really don't know how science should fit into laws, but when it comes to decision making I think that we can definitely use science. If people have decisions to make and there is something in science that can help with that decision, then they should know it , or be able to look it up and research about it so I think that is something that science can definitely be used in.

1896 election

Elections always seem to come in a point in time when many things are changing, or need to be changed. This gives the candidates the ability to express the way they feel about all of the issues the country is facing. They can show their ideas for reform to the people, in their presidential campaigns. The 1896 election came right after a major time in history and people were trying to change things for the better. The events that happen prior to the time of election help the presidential candidates show that they got through hard times, or that they can get through those hard times, and they show all of the things they are going to do. Prior events to the 1896 election like the economic depression, the Populism, and foreign relations were some of the themes seen throughout this elections campaign. Those are things that bring the election to it's highest point, when the candidates show what they are for on these issues.

The election of 1896 between McKinley and Bryan was impacted by the economic depression that started in the year 1893, which lasted until 1897. The depression of 1893 according to the book Nation of Nations was "the deepest the nation had yet experienced." A lot of companies and banks were failing at this time, this was a hard time for people all over for the companies, and the people who worked in those companies. When people saw that the economy was crashing they all panicked and they started taking out all of their money from the banks, which was one of the things that caused the bank failures. Something else that happened was that "A quarter of the nation's railroads went bankrupt." All of this was very bad for the economy "in total over 15,000 companies and 500 banks failed." The unemployment was very high in these times according to the Nation of Nations book " by August 1893 unemployment stood at 1 million; by the middle of 1894, it was at 3 million." This whole economic crisis connects to the election of 1896 in a few ways because this economic crisis lasted until the year 1897 so the elections were being held during the time of the economic depression. The elections campaign was said to be a "battle of standards." According to the Nation of Nations book. Both of the major parties Republicans and Democrats. The republicans were with he gold standards, and the democrats were with he silver standards and if they should be the nation's monetary standards. So McKinley was for gold, and Bryan was for silver. They each had their own idea of what they thought would bring their economy up from the ground, the populist party was also something that was connected to the election of 1896, they were connected a little bit with the Democrats and they went for the silver standards.

The Populist Party otherwise known as The People's Party was a political party that wanted to represent the farmers and laborers in the 1890's. They were "clinging to their strategy of working within the Democratic party" according to Nation on Nation's , They had a lot of the same thoughts like the Democrats so they followed along with them. In the election of 1896 the Populists also were for silver, at first they thought that the Democrats were going to stick with the gold like the Republicans, they felt that the Democrat party had stolen their thunder by "endorsing silver" according Nation of Nations. They felt that if they did not fuse with the Democrats they were going to loose all of their men that were for silver to a party more powerful than them, the Democrats. So they ended up fusing with the Democrats which did not help Bryan in the campaign. "The nomination of the People's Party actually did more harm than good by labeling Bryan a Populist (which he was not." According to Nation of Nations the populist party fusing with the Democratic party did not actually help Bryan instead it did him harm, Which helped McKinley. The 1896 election showed that there were many parties that contributed to it, in the end the Populist party vanished from the political scene.

Foreign relations is also something that was a theme in the election of 1896. The two presidential candidates had their stand on the annexation of different countries. Bryan was against the annexation of states, and McKinley wasn't. The U.S was expanding and some Americans felt that was a good thing because they felt that they needed to secure raw materials and the consumer markets that were overseas. Others actually did not like the thought of U.S expansionism. In the election Bryan was one of those people who did not think expanding America would help at all. According to The Antiwar Movements book, he argued that "the extension of American power to foreign lands does not make sense financially is illegal under American law, and will inevitably lead to a war." He felt that the expansion was a risk that they should not take. He was an anti-imperialist he did not want there to be any wars. So it was basically McKinley a republican expansionist against Bryan Democratic anti-imperialist. In the 1890's Cuba was in a "State of both political and economic upheaval" they had rebelled against Spanish colonizers who were in control of Cuba since it was Spanish territory. The U.S saw this as an advantage, they passed the Wilson-Gorman Tarrif which made it impossible for Cuba to control the sugar prices they were not able to pick their favorable price, which threw them into a devastating economic crisis. The Americans stepped into the rebels Cuban because they wanted to gain their favor, and that was one of the things that was a conflict between the expansionists, and the anti-imperialists. Which is how that was involved in the 1896 election.

In every time period there are many different things that happen in the world that make elections what they are. It is battle of opposing ideas, of two different candidates. They both have their own ideas about what they are going to do about all of the different situations that are going on at the time or previous issues that were either good for the country or bad. The previous events lead up to the conflicts between the two parties because they both have their own ideas, and they have to put them out there for the people to know what side they are on. Just like our most recent election had gone through with McCain and Obama. This is just a process that every election goes through and will go through for the rest of the years.

OBAMA LISTEN!! revised!!dos

Thank you President Obama for giving me this time to speak. We are going through some pretty rough times with our economic situation, you have come into office knowing that this very big obstacle would be here in your way, why did you decide to take the spot ?
Many people have lost or are loosing their jobs I would like to ask what are the steps you plan to take to try and fix this problem?
The people in America need their jobs to feed their families or even just themselves. They cannot do that if their job is no longer in existence.
When FDR came into office he also had to face the same thing which was the first Depression, obviously history seems to repeat itself. He had a plan that I thought was pretty good in order to change the unemployment rate in America. This New deal was said to do the following "The New Deal produced a wide variety of programs to reduce unemployment, assist businesses and agriculture, regulate banking and the stock market, and provide security for the needy, elderly, and disabled. The basic idea of early New Deal programs was to lower the supply of goods to the current, depressed level of consumption."
I think that you should do something of the same sort, since you are in the same predicament. FDR was able to work on it and help people with the problems that they faced just like you want to do now, according to your words in your article in the Washington Post "With it, we will create or save more than 3 million jobs over the next two years, provide immediate tax relief to 95 percent of American workers, ignite spending by businesses and consumers alike, and take steps to strengthen our country for years to come."

So I think that now you should try and look back in the past and analyze the work that was done to make things better in previous hardships, and maybe you can take something from there and apply it to what is going on now.

People all around the world really believe in you and they like that you are our President, they have some things to say to you and I know you will listen if you can watch this video that I found you will see some of the things that they want and need to help them through this hard time.

You already have the basic idea of what people want and we can see this in the article you wrote for the Washington Post you said you want to , "save billions by making 2 million homes and 75 percent of federal buildings more energy-efficient, and to double our capacity to generate alternative sources of energy within three years."
"Now is the time to protect health insurance for the more than 8 million Americans"
You already know the things that people want now the only thing left to do is for you to actually do them. Fulfill the promises that you gave.

Something that you should not do is make any Malinvestments. Don't put any of the money in places where it is not needed, it will only make it worse because the people will use it for something that isn't even necessary or is unfair to a lot of other people. People did this in the time of the Great Depression and they are also doing it now, and it show in this excerpt, "This money is then invested in capital goods that would not be justified at a market level of interest rates." People were giving away money unwisely, to people who could probably pay off their companies debt with their own money. A lot of the CEO's of companies use their companies money unwisely just to benefit themselves or others in high roles such as giving their CFO's or ,other people who are in high positions in the companies, bonuses while their company is dying. Then they go and ask for money rolling up in their jets, I don't understand why they have to go and ask for money when they have it, they just don't want to use their own money
In One of Frank Rich's articles you can see how people are misusing the money that they have. For example this excerpt is talking about John Thain the previous CEO of the Merrill Lynch company "he was lobbying (unsuccessfully) for a personal bonus as high as $30 million and spending $1.22 million of company cash on refurbishing his office, an instantly notorious $1,405 trashcan included." They spend their money on unnecessary things, so that is definitely something I think you should look at because all of these CEO's and other people who are already rich are not going to be the ones who suffer in the end. The people who are getting laid off and loosing their jobs, all of the "ordinary people" will suffer, the rich already have money they can use but we don't. So please President Obama I hope this advice was at least somewhat helpful and thanks once more for letting me come and speak. I hope you all have a nice day and think about the words I have spoken to you , and I hope you all make good choices that will lead our country out of this economic crisis.

What makes a great interview???

Design Principles:

I think that one interview design principle that all interviewers always have to have is flexibility. They need to be able to make up more questions on the spot. If people do that they cannot get a lot of information that they were not planning on getting. Also sometimes people feel like they only have a certain amount of questions but once they get started and the interviewee starts answering them they get more ideas on follow up questions. I think it a very good skill that an interview could have and that would make the interview good.If they ask the right questions.
her is an example

q: At this early stage, would you say that you were happily married?

a: Very much so. But, the pressure on us both as a couple with the media was phenomenal, and misunderstood by a great many people.

We'd be going round Australia, for instance, and all you could hear was, oh, she's on the other side. Now, if you're a man, like my husband a proud man, you mind about that if you hear it every day for four weeks. And you feel low about it, instead of feeling happy and sharing it.

q: When you say ´she's on the other side', what do you mean?

a: Well, they weren't on the right side to wave at me or to touch me.

q: So they were expressing a preference even then for you rather than your husband?

a: Yes - which I felt very uncomfortable with, and I felt it was unfair, because I wanted to share.

q: But were you flattered by the media attention particularly?

a: No, not particularly, because with the media attention came a lot of jealousy, a great deal of complicated situations arose because of that.

The Princess and the Press

Another design principle that makes an interview great would have to be when an interviewer asks some hard questions, because these are things that the audience would want to know. Also sometime when interviewers ask several questions at one time this is kind of a good way of interviewing, sometime it can seem like the interviewee is being interrogated instead if interviewed, but they may sometimes get good responses from the person. This i think means that the interviewer really wants to know the roots of the situation, and how the interviewee feels about it.

example

HARWOOD: How did it feel to be there with the former presidents today and what can you learn from them, especially the current President Bush whom you criticized so strongly in the campaign?

another one is

HARWOOD: ...why stop at $775 billion? Why not go to the $1.2 trillion that some economists have recommended? Is that because you think that the political figure of a trillion dollars is too politically charged to get over? Is it because you think more spending would be pork rather than stimulus? Or do you think you've figured out exactly the right amount of stimulus that's needed?

Making a description/add a little biography about the person that's being interviewed.

Example from CBS: Couric Palin Interview

(CBS) When CBS News anchor Katie Couric sat down for an exclusive interview with vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, she focused on the economy - but also addressed reports that the lobbying firm of Sen. John McCain's campaign manager received payments from the controversial mortgage giant Freddie Mac until last month. Couric asked for the Alaska governor's reaction to that.

internship man!!

Today was pretty great when I got to my internship, Stephanie and I were greeted by one of our mentors co-workers, and then we went across the street to find our mentor Ben who was eating with another co-worker in a beach front restaurant. We then introduced ourselves, and then we went back to our building, and we went through an orientation with one of the people who works there and she introduced us to pretty much every single person who works in the Wild coast office. We had to read a couple of things and we were given a folder full of things from the organization, with their mission statement and the type of things that they do for the environment. After bieng told what the organization does we went back with our mentor Ben who asked us about our interests, and what kind of things we would like to do. He talked about some projects that we could do, and was just trying to get our input, like what we wanted to do. After that we were left alone in the conference room to watch some videos and we also had to read these paper that he gave us and he said when he came he wanted us to each have three questions for him. So we did that. After that was done he came back in we asked our questions and they were answered, we had a little question and answer session. Then we had to set up the conference room because one of our co-workers was going to present a project that she had, so we just basically put out the supplies that each person was going to use, and brought in chairs. After that we helped clean up the area where the people were going to be, so we got to clean on our first day, what fun that was.! After that we just sat don in the conference room were we had to brainstorm project ideas which we are going to discuss with Ben on Thursday.

Stephanie's sister took us to internship.

For lunch I just walked to Da Kines with Evan where he got his food and then we walked back to school, and then me and Stephanie waited for her sister to pick us up from school to take us to our internship.

After intership Stephanie's sisters picked us up and we went on our journey to
In N Out where we all got double double's, they were delicious by the way. Then we went to Stephanie's house and just all ate there with her parents and her other sister. Then later ON Stephanie and her sisters took me home.

I felt that everything went pretty good I am actually excited in seeing what kind of projects we will be working on all of them are beneficial to our environment as well as our health so that will be something fun to work in.

Presidents

There have been 43 Presidents and we just got a new One Barrack Obama, he would be the 44th president of the United States. Before they become president they have to make an inaugural address, also when their office term is over they give farewell addresses. These things either show what they have planned to do for their time in office, or to reflect on the time that they were in office. For example Franklin D. Roosevelt, had to give an inaugural address, in a time of struggle. That is the kind of predicament that our new president Obama has to face. There are many things that happen several times in history, like the saying "History repeats itself". This is what we see that is happening now. FDR had became president in the time of the great depression, just like now Obama has become president in another time of crisis. These were times of the Great Depression, economic struggle, and loss of jobs.

In the time Franklin D. Roosevelt was president, it was the time of the Great depression they were facing a lot of different things and he had to become the leader of the nation, just like Obama has to do now. They both knew that they were going into a situation that were not going to be easy to overcome. People say that we are headed into another great depression, and hopefully that will not happen. Now that Obama is president he has to make very good decision in order for our nation to strive and not fall into something bad. He has to take the mistakes made by others and change them for the better. He should learn from the past and make sure he does not do the same, but he has to do better than people before him to ensure the best for our nation. Paul Krugman says,"But that will be precisely because we understood that the current crisis is, indeed, like the Great Depression in important ways. Only those who learn from history can hope to avoid repeating it." He is connecting the two scenarios that are a part of history, and we all see what is going on is similar to other things that have happened.

The economic crisis that happened when FDR, is quite similar to the one going on now many people struggling to make ends meet, losing their homes, jobs, and not having very much money to support their families. Many people in our nation are suffering, and it is something that can be seen all over. This is not a good thing people should be able to do everything they need to in order to live a good life but by them losing their homes, and jobs they cannot do so. David A. Patterson says "When I travel across the state, I see communities suffering". He sees all of the people who are going through hard times, and he knows that they cannot even afford to get sick with the rising cost of health care. When something like that happens it means that things are bad, and they need to change. It is good that we have a new leader and hopefully he can lead us through this struggle.

Something that comes with the economic crisis is the loss of jobs all over the world, people are being laid off with no warning because of this. they are left having to fend for themselves. It is hard for them to find jobs because of all of the people who are loosing them, companies are not going to hire more people when they have just let many of them go, it is something hard that a lot of people have to deal with. The job loss is something that even happened in the time when FDR was president and it is happening now the NY Times says, "New York City’s unemployment rate jumped to 7.2 percent last month from 6.2 percent in November as some employers cut back on hiring for the holiday season and others continued laying off workers,..." Things are not getting better the percentage of unemployment went up got way higher in a matter of months. Many people are getting laid off, and others are not being hiring. The job world is deteriorating from previous years when our "lowest unemployment record was 4.3%".
The Ny times says, "The city ended the year with 3.21 million jobs, almost 50,000 fewer than it had at the end of 2007." there are less jobs and more unemployed people having to fend for themselves when they cannot even get a job, I wonder what they all have to do to make money. Things have repeated themselves and not for the good, but hopefully our new leader can help the situation at hand, with the help of others.

Both of these presidents went into office knowing that they were going to have to deal with all of the struggles the nation was going through, but they decided to take the challenge. Making their own plans on how they were going to change what was going on. They were both ready to take the challenge even though it is a big one. FDR said, " I am prepared under my constitutional duty to recommend the measures that a stricken nation in the midst of a stricken world may require. These measures, or such other measures as the Congress may build out of its experience and wisdom, I shall seek, within my constitutional authority, to bring to speedy adoption." He was ready to take on what was coming to him through drastic measures, and he would even use the wisdom of congress as help and support for what he had to do. He probably knew that he was not able to do it all on his own so he got help from others that were there to help him. Obama has to now face the things that are so similar, to the struggles FDR faced. he came into presidency to help our nation, and he needs the support of all of us, he said these words in his inauguration address. "Let it be told to the future world ... that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it)." This quote is kind like saying that the country as a whole is going to come together and face these struggles. It is truth because we as a country are suffering and when we flourish we will all flourish. He is basically saying that he is taking the challenge, and facing what is to come,he will not turn back and run but he will face it even though it is a great obstacle in his path. Both of these leaders were not afraid to do something they faced their fears and just took it all in, that shows they are good men that that will be in history for a long time, for the good or the bad.

Our President!!

"We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness."

The quote says something strong to me, we have been through so much struggle in America and no we are also in a time of crisis, but Obama said we are still a young nation, and that called out to me because our nation has been here long, but what i think he was trying to say was that we are still learning and there are still many more struggles to come. When people are young it is said that they make a lot of mistake s because they don't know about everything that is out there. Our nation's leaders still make mistakes but we are learning from them and every year something new is coming into our world. Like he said, "it is time to set childish things aside", our generation, our nation has to take things seriously, learn from other mistakes and not let them repeat themselves.

This relates to everyday life because it is something new that has come to us, something different, that many did not want, and a lot of people feared. but nonethe less it has come, things are changing hopefully for the better. Our nation has gown so much from times of segregation to now being able to come together as one and have the unfamiliar take place. Hopefully our nations leaders will learn from previous mistakes, and help make the world we are living in better not worse. They have to think critically and pay attention to everything happening around them, it is like any other situation that has to be analyzed before you jump into it. That is how people make good decisions. This does show equality because he is our first black president, even though he is not full black he is still part black, and those characteristics have taken over his appearance and I am sure that if we were still in the times of slavery, or segregation, others wouldn't care that he is only half black they would just look at the color of his skin and thrust hatred upon him without hesitation. Those things have changed thank god, and now we are in a time were people are all equal.

One she was married to Martin Luther king Jr. and the civil rights movements began she had a very big role in it as well as her husband. Her husband was a great leader in the civil rights movement, but she was also there.

*Planning marches

*Freedom Concerts

*Speeches

She did a lot of work along side of her husband, and sometimes gave speeches, when standing in for her husband. She helped Martin Luther King Jr. with a lot of things before he died, and carried on with his work after he had died.

P3.

Mrs. King went through a lot of grief when her husband was assassinated, but even through a ll of that she went on with his work. She dedicated her life to helping people.

*The King Center

*peace and justice rallies

What is he for??

When comparing both articles, "Bush to Protect Three Areas In Pacific" and "Bush's Seven Deadly Environmental Sins" there is a mix of ideas. In the very first article they are talking about how Bush is helping keep a big amount of ocean safe that is bigger than California. He is making three new marine national monuments, these monuments are suppost to help preserve the marine life and the ecosystems. Bush wanting to build these monuments contradicts his previous environmental record. This article also talks about how bush is doing something now that is new because he resisted the mandatory curbs of the greenhouse gasses, that cause climate change that we are having. by the end of his term he will have protected more ocean than any person in history. The first article says, "by the end of his term he will have protected more ocean than any person in history" I think it is funny that he did not want to help the people with he climate change as well as our environment, but now all of a sudden when he is about to be out of office he making a big sanctuary for marine life, that's kinda odd.

The second article "Bush's Seven Deadly Environmental Sins" talks about Bush's environmental record, most of the things on there are negative aspects of what Bush has done while in office and how they are going to stay with us even after he is not in office anymore. It talks about seven instances where bush did something wrong, it also talks about how President elect Barrack Obama is going to have to be the one to fix the problems that Bush mad while in office, after everyone of the "sins" Obama's plan was mention, one of his plans was to.. "Uphold his campaign promise to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050."

Both of these articles had evidence and quotes which is really good. They both have their own separate ideas although some of them maybe negative That is what the writer was thinking and you can see that in the writing. It is like one of them is showing something positive that he did which contradicts his environmental record, and the other show the negative that he did in his environmental record. So If you didn't know what it was the sevens sins article shows you something that makes the two articles connect in some way.

internship man!!

1. What do you hope to learn or discover about the "adult" world of work while you are at your internship?

i expect to learn a lot about the adult world, like how hings can get hard. I think that when there is a challenge it can be good because it is something new to overcome, and then once you have overcome that challenge you can be proud of your work ,and all of the things you had to go through to get there. A challenge is always good for anyone, there are always obstacles in life that you have to face, now the thing is whether you are going to take the challenge, or give up at the first sign of hardship. I will like to learn how to be more independent because it is like having a job, but you don't get paid. It is a big responsibility and we have to show that we can do it. i hope to get a very good experience from it, and learn all that i can from the field that I will be interning at.

2. What do you hope to learn or discover about yourself and your identity while you are at your internship this semester?

I hope to learn how I can handle things in life because internship is like another class and I have to manage that class as well as all of the other classes that I am going to have this semester. I want to learn how I will work under pressure, if I am ever under pressure. Will I handle it wisely? or just give up? I feel that going through this I hope to learn whether I want to be in the working field of whatever I did on my internship, I will be able to either eliminate that choice or put it on my list of things that I want to do. I hope to learn whether I want to do something like that or if I want to change course. that will be very valuable to me when it comes to going to college I will know what I want to study. That is always something good to know.

3. What goals do you have for yourself for your internship experience?

Some goals that i have would have to be that
*I want to learn as much as I can from everything that I do.
*get something out f the experience
*Something else would have to be that I have a good project for my internship

whos.amung.us - visitor maps
