immersion

1. What are you most excited about in regards to your immersion experience? Why do you feel this way?

I am really excited about being able to work with Stephanie on this amazing video that we will be crating. Through making this video we are going to be helping people learn but we are going to also be learning in the process. We will get to see how things work in Tijuana and how they compare to how things work in San Diego. We will also be able to put our thoughts on the subject in the Imperial Beach newspaper so I think that is awesome.

2. What are you most concerned about (what causes the most stress) regarding immersion? Why do you feel this way?

OOOhhh my goodness I am concerned about a lot all of this work has to be done at a certain time and it is going to be hard to finish all of the things that we have to finish in this certain amount of time. We have to try and finish this video by the eleventh and we will have time.. but it might be hard because we have to film a lot of things and put it all together at the this time. I am conceredned that we might not finish it in time

Peoples Blogs....

For advice to Barack Obama I chose Ana's blog
here is an excerpt from her blog

An issue that resonates in my mind and in the minds of other Americans, is the struggle to hold a job and steering clear of unemployment. So many have already been affected by this and America knows it far too well, as it is embedded in one of the darkest periods of our country's history. The Great Depression brought hardships upon millions of Americans, sounding very similar to the hardships of today. "By 1932 the unemployment rate had soared past 20 percent. Thousands of banks and businesses had failed." Currently, with our unemployment rate at 7.6 percent, we cannot afford to let it rise any further and rise to the point of the 1930's. A piece of advice for you would be to focus on creating more jobs for Americans. The new jobs should be structured to build upon advances in technology. It sounds like this is already woven into your plan, so I think it should be implemented as soon as possible.

I chose Ana's blog because she gave good advice on how to help the economic situation as well as the people, she talked about current things and also about things in the past that could connect with the topic, she also has very good writing I liked it a lot.

For literary analysis I chose Nyachare's blog

Throughout "The Kite Runner", the antagonist was Assef, often referred to as "blue-eyed Assef" he was known as a savage-thirsty type of man who was evil and put on a show for his parents and those who held his reputation to such high standards. In chapter 5 page 18 there's a quote that refers to him that says, "...he walked the neighborhood like a Khan strolling through his land eager-to-please entourage." His being incuded a two-sided character who was amused by trouble and mischief.

I really like how Nyachare talks about symbolism as a literary device that was used in the book that she read The Kite runner. She takes quotes from the book that show exactly that. i like how she specifically pick out some quotes from the bool where symbolism was shown.

For Historical writing I chose Evan Lott's blog

The populist were their own party, but some of them worked within the democractic party. in the election of 1896 the populists were at a crossroad, stuck between gold and silverites. One populist even said "if we fuse [with the Demorcrats] we are sunk." He then went on to say "if we dont fuse, all the silver men we have will leave us fore the more powerful Democrats. The populist party was going through a rough patch during the election.

I chose Evan's blog because he was able to talk about the things he needed to talk about in his blog, it was very informational, if people didn't know what things were they could learn something about them from his blog. The excerpt from his blog shows this, he talks about some of the main things the populist party was for or against

Darwin's BDAY!!!

Darwin was a famous scientist.... As humanities students (and humans), what responsibility do we have for the understanding of science? What role should scientific inquiry and scientific knowledge play in our own society? How should science influence our decisions, laws, and culture?

Well as humanities students I really don't know, but as humans I think that the understanding of science is something that we should probably know. Well at least the science of life, whether it is plant life, animal life, or the life of people. In biology we were learning about the science of life, and the things that living organism consist of. I thought it was pretty interesting to now were things come from and how they started, also we get to learn about the people who discovered all of these different things.
It is good for people to know how things work an for them to be interested in. I can play a big role in our society it already does it is something that all students learn in school and maybe people can pursue a career that has to do with that. If people want to be curious and find out new things about the science then they can do so I don't think it is something that everybody has to do, just that people who are interested in it, and they can figure out many things in this world.
I really don't know how science should fit into laws, but when it comes to decision making I think that we can definitely use science. If people have decisions to make and there is something in science that can help with that decision, then they should know it , or be able to look it up and research about it so I think that is something that science can definitely be used in.

1896 election

Elections always seem to come in a point in time when many things are changing, or need to be changed. This gives the candidates the ability to express the way they feel about all of the issues the country is facing. They can show their ideas for reform to the people, in their presidential campaigns. The 1896 election came right after a major time in history and people were trying to change things for the better. The events that happen prior to the time of election help the presidential candidates show that they got through hard times, or that they can get through those hard times, and they show all of the things they are going to do. Prior events to the 1896 election like the economic depression, the Populism, and foreign relations were some of the themes seen throughout this elections campaign. Those are things that bring the election to it's highest point, when the candidates show what they are for on these issues.

The election of 1896 between McKinley and Bryan was impacted by the economic depression that started in the year 1893, which lasted until 1897. The depression of 1893 according to the book Nation of Nations was "the deepest the nation had yet experienced." A lot of companies and banks were failing at this time, this was a hard time for people all over for the companies, and the people who worked in those companies. When people saw that the economy was crashing they all panicked and they started taking out all of their money from the banks, which was one of the things that caused the bank failures. Something else that happened was that "A quarter of the nation's railroads went bankrupt." All of this was very bad for the economy "in total over 15,000 companies and 500 banks failed." The unemployment was very high in these times according to the Nation of Nations book " by August 1893 unemployment stood at 1 million; by the middle of 1894, it was at 3 million." This whole economic crisis connects to the election of 1896 in a few ways because this economic crisis lasted until the year 1897 so the elections were being held during the time of the economic depression. The elections campaign was said to be a "battle of standards." According to the Nation of Nations book. Both of the major parties Republicans and Democrats. The republicans were with he gold standards, and the democrats were with he silver standards and if they should be the nation's monetary standards. So McKinley was for gold, and Bryan was for silver. They each had their own idea of what they thought would bring their economy up from the ground, the populist party was also something that was connected to the election of 1896, they were connected a little bit with the Democrats and they went for the silver standards.

The Populist Party otherwise known as The People's Party was a political party that wanted to represent the farmers and laborers in the 1890's. They were "clinging to their strategy of working within the Democratic party" according to Nation on Nation's , They had a lot of the same thoughts like the Democrats so they followed along with them. In the election of 1896 the Populists also were for silver, at first they thought that the Democrats were going to stick with the gold like the Republicans, they felt that the Democrat party had stolen their thunder by "endorsing silver" according Nation of Nations. They felt that if they did not fuse with the Democrats they were going to loose all of their men that were for silver to a party more powerful than them, the Democrats. So they ended up fusing with the Democrats which did not help Bryan in the campaign. "The nomination of the People's Party actually did more harm than good by labeling Bryan a Populist (which he was not." According to Nation of Nations the populist party fusing with the Democratic party did not actually help Bryan instead it did him harm, Which helped McKinley. The 1896 election showed that there were many parties that contributed to it, in the end the Populist party vanished from the political scene.

Foreign relations is also something that was a theme in the election of 1896. The two presidential candidates had their stand on the annexation of different countries. Bryan was against the annexation of states, and McKinley wasn't. The U.S was expanding and some Americans felt that was a good thing because they felt that they needed to secure raw materials and the consumer markets that were overseas. Others actually did not like the thought of U.S expansionism. In the election Bryan was one of those people who did not think expanding America would help at all. According to The Antiwar Movements book, he argued that "the extension of American power to foreign lands does not make sense financially is illegal under American law, and will inevitably lead to a war." He felt that the expansion was a risk that they should not take. He was an anti-imperialist he did not want there to be any wars. So it was basically McKinley a republican expansionist against Bryan Democratic anti-imperialist. In the 1890's Cuba was in a "State of both political and economic upheaval" they had rebelled against Spanish colonizers who were in control of Cuba since it was Spanish territory. The U.S saw this as an advantage, they passed the Wilson-Gorman Tarrif which made it impossible for Cuba to control the sugar prices they were not able to pick their favorable price, which threw them into a devastating economic crisis. The Americans stepped into the rebels Cuban because they wanted to gain their favor, and that was one of the things that was a conflict between the expansionists, and the anti-imperialists. Which is how that was involved in the 1896 election.

In every time period there are many different things that happen in the world that make elections what they are. It is battle of opposing ideas, of two different candidates. They both have their own ideas about what they are going to do about all of the different situations that are going on at the time or previous issues that were either good for the country or bad. The previous events lead up to the conflicts between the two parties because they both have their own ideas, and they have to put them out there for the people to know what side they are on. Just like our most recent election had gone through with McCain and Obama. This is just a process that every election goes through and will go through for the rest of the years.

OBAMA LISTEN!! revised!!dos

Thank you President Obama for giving me this time to speak. We are going through some pretty rough times with our economic situation, you have come into office knowing that this very big obstacle would be here in your way, why did you decide to take the spot ?
Many people have lost or are loosing their jobs I would like to ask what are the steps you plan to take to try and fix this problem?
The people in America need their jobs to feed their families or even just themselves. They cannot do that if their job is no longer in existence.
When FDR came into office he also had to face the same thing which was the first Depression, obviously history seems to repeat itself. He had a plan that I thought was pretty good in order to change the unemployment rate in America. This New deal was said to do the following "The New Deal produced a wide variety of programs to reduce unemployment, assist businesses and agriculture, regulate banking and the stock market, and provide security for the needy, elderly, and disabled. The basic idea of early New Deal programs was to lower the supply of goods to the current, depressed level of consumption."
I think that you should do something of the same sort, since you are in the same predicament. FDR was able to work on it and help people with the problems that they faced just like you want to do now, according to your words in your article in the Washington Post "With it, we will create or save more than 3 million jobs over the next two years, provide immediate tax relief to 95 percent of American workers, ignite spending by businesses and consumers alike, and take steps to strengthen our country for years to come."

So I think that now you should try and look back in the past and analyze the work that was done to make things better in previous hardships, and maybe you can take something from there and apply it to what is going on now.

People all around the world really believe in you and they like that you are our President, they have some things to say to you and I know you will listen if you can watch this video that I found you will see some of the things that they want and need to help them through this hard time.

You already have the basic idea of what people want and we can see this in the article you wrote for the Washington Post you said you want to , "save billions by making 2 million homes and 75 percent of federal buildings more energy-efficient, and to double our capacity to generate alternative sources of energy within three years."
"Now is the time to protect health insurance for the more than 8 million Americans"
You already know the things that people want now the only thing left to do is for you to actually do them. Fulfill the promises that you gave.

Something that you should not do is make any Malinvestments. Don't put any of the money in places where it is not needed, it will only make it worse because the people will use it for something that isn't even necessary or is unfair to a lot of other people. People did this in the time of the Great Depression and they are also doing it now, and it show in this excerpt, "This money is then invested in capital goods that would not be justified at a market level of interest rates." People were giving away money unwisely, to people who could probably pay off their companies debt with their own money. A lot of the CEO's of companies use their companies money unwisely just to benefit themselves or others in high roles such as giving their CFO's or ,other people who are in high positions in the companies, bonuses while their company is dying. Then they go and ask for money rolling up in their jets, I don't understand why they have to go and ask for money when they have it, they just don't want to use their own money
In One of Frank Rich's articles you can see how people are misusing the money that they have. For example this excerpt is talking about John Thain the previous CEO of the Merrill Lynch company "he was lobbying (unsuccessfully) for a personal bonus as high as $30 million and spending $1.22 million of company cash on refurbishing his office, an instantly notorious $1,405 trashcan included." They spend their money on unnecessary things, so that is definitely something I think you should look at because all of these CEO's and other people who are already rich are not going to be the ones who suffer in the end. The people who are getting laid off and loosing their jobs, all of the "ordinary people" will suffer, the rich already have money they can use but we don't. So please President Obama I hope this advice was at least somewhat helpful and thanks once more for letting me come and speak. I hope you all have a nice day and think about the words I have spoken to you , and I hope you all make good choices that will lead our country out of this economic crisis.

What makes a great interview???

Design Principles:

I think that one interview design principle that all interviewers always have to have is flexibility. They need to be able to make up more questions on the spot. If people do that they cannot get a lot of information that they were not planning on getting. Also sometimes people feel like they only have a certain amount of questions but once they get started and the interviewee starts answering them they get more ideas on follow up questions. I think it a very good skill that an interview could have and that would make the interview good.If they ask the right questions.
her is an example

q: At this early stage, would you say that you were happily married?

a: Very much so. But, the pressure on us both as a couple with the media was phenomenal, and misunderstood by a great many people.

We'd be going round Australia, for instance, and all you could hear was, oh, she's on the other side. Now, if you're a man, like my husband a proud man, you mind about that if you hear it every day for four weeks. And you feel low about it, instead of feeling happy and sharing it.

q: When you say ´she's on the other side', what do you mean?

a: Well, they weren't on the right side to wave at me or to touch me.

q: So they were expressing a preference even then for you rather than your husband?

a: Yes - which I felt very uncomfortable with, and I felt it was unfair, because I wanted to share.

q: But were you flattered by the media attention particularly?

a: No, not particularly, because with the media attention came a lot of jealousy, a great deal of complicated situations arose because of that.

The Princess and the Press

Another design principle that makes an interview great would have to be when an interviewer asks some hard questions, because these are things that the audience would want to know. Also sometime when interviewers ask several questions at one time this is kind of a good way of interviewing, sometime it can seem like the interviewee is being interrogated instead if interviewed, but they may sometimes get good responses from the person. This i think means that the interviewer really wants to know the roots of the situation, and how the interviewee feels about it.

example

HARWOOD: How did it feel to be there with the former presidents today and what can you learn from them, especially the current President Bush whom you criticized so strongly in the campaign?

another one is

HARWOOD: ...why stop at $775 billion? Why not go to the $1.2 trillion that some economists have recommended? Is that because you think that the political figure of a trillion dollars is too politically charged to get over? Is it because you think more spending would be pork rather than stimulus? Or do you think you've figured out exactly the right amount of stimulus that's needed?

John Hardwood interviews Barack Obama

Making a description/add a little biography about the person that's being interviewed.

Example from CBS: Couric Palin Interview

(CBS) When CBS News anchor Katie Couric sat down for an exclusive interview with vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, she focused on the economy - but also addressed reports that the lobbying firm of Sen. John McCain's campaign manager received payments from the controversial mortgage giant Freddie Mac until last month. Couric asked for the Alaska governor's reaction to that.

proffesional interview

We had to find a professional interview that we though was goo and this is the one that I picked.
